A colostomy base (often called a baseplate or skin barrier) is a key part of a colostomy pouching system used after colostomy surgery. The colostomy base is the adhesive barrier that sticks to the skin around the stoma (the opening on the abdomen where stool exits). It protects the skin from irritation caused by stool and moisture, creates a secure seal around the stoma, and holds the colostomy bag in place.
