The Dynamic Hand Splint is a specialized medical orthosis engineered to position the hand and wrist in a functional resting state. It is designed to maintain the wrist in approximately 30° of dorsiflexion while supporting the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and interphalangeal (IP) joints in slight flexion. This device is indicated for the management of fractures, for post-cast support, and for various neurological conditions, such as peripheral nerve injuries, to prevent deformity and promote recovery.
Why to Use: This orthosis provides precise, non-flexible positioning, which is critical for the management of complex hand and wrist conditions:
- Maintains Optimal Functional Position: By holding the wrist in 30° of dorsiflexion (the “position of function”), the orthosis promotes optimal healing, helps maintain muscle length, and prepares the hand for a more effective return to activity.
- Stabilization for Fracture Healing: Provides rigid immobilization for fractures of the wrist, metacarpals, or phalanges. By maintaining stable alignment, it creates an ideal environment for bone consolidation.
- Management of Neurological Deficits: Essential for patients with peripheral nerve injuries (e.g., radial, median, ulnar nerve palsy) to protect denervated muscles, prevent gravity-induced deformities, and maintain the hand’s functional arches.
- Prevents Contractures and Deformity: Actively combats the development of joint stiffness, muscle shortening, and flexion contractures that can result from spasticity, paralysis, or prolonged immobilization in a non-functional position.
- Transitional Support Post-Casting: Serves as a critical tool after a plaster cast is removed, maintaining the corrected position of the wrist and fingers while protecting the healing structures during rehabilitation.
- Effective Pain and Edema Control: By completely immobilizing the affected area in a comfortable position, the orthosis significantly reduces pain and can help manage swelling (edema).
Indications for Use:
- Post-operative or conservative management of wrist, carpal, metacarpal, and phalangeal fractures.
- Post-cast removal for continued alignment and support.
- Peripheral nerve injuries (Radial, Median, Ulnar Nerve Palsy).
- Spasticity management following stroke (CVA) or traumatic brain injury.
- Prevention and correction of flexion contractures.
- Severe tendonitis or tenosynovitis requiring complete immobilization.
- Rheumatoid Arthritis flare-ups for joint rest and protection.
How to Use:
- Unfasten all straps. Gently place the patient’s hand and forearm into the pre-shaped orthosis.
- Ensure the wrist is correctly seated at the 30° dorsiflexion angle and that the fingers and thumb are resting comfortably in the designated troughs.
- Sequentially fasten the straps, starting with those on the forearm and moving towards the hand.
- Adjust the tension to achieve a snug, secure fit that eliminates movement but does not impede circulation or cause pressure points.
Key Features:
- Therapeutic 30° Dorsiflexion Positioning: The pre-shaped shell is fixed in the optimal functional position for wrist and hand recovery.
- Anatomical Palmar and Finger Support: Provides full support to the arches of the hand and maintains the fingers and thumb in a slightly flexed, relaxed position.
- Multi-Point Strapping System: Equipped with several adjustable straps to ensure a secure, customized fit and prevent the orthosis from migrating.
- Rigid, Lightweight Construction: Made from a durable but lightweight thermoplastic, providing robust support without unnecessary weight.
- Padded for Comfort: Lined with a soft, breathable foam liner that can be removed for cleaning, enhancing patient comfort and hygiene.
- Made in Turkey.
How to Care:
- The removable foam liner can be detached from the rigid shell.
- Hand wash the liner in cool water using a mild soap. Rinse thoroughly and lay it flat to air dry completely.
- The rigid thermoplastic shell can be wiped clean with a damp cloth and mild soap or a hospital-grade disinfectant.
- Ensure both components are fully dry before reassembling. Do not expose the orthosis to high heat sources.
Material Composition:
- Shell: Medical-grade, rigid Thermoplastic (e.g., Polyethylene), pre-shaped for anatomical correctness.
- Lining: Soft, hypoallergenic, and breathable laminated foam liner.
- Strapping System: Durable nylon straps with industrial-strength hook-and-loop (Velcro) closures.
