A Nelaton Catheter is a flexible, single-use, straight tube used for short-term, intermittent bladder catheterization to drain urine via the urethra. Made of medical-grade PVC, it features a smooth coned tip and lateral eyes for atraumatic insertion and efficient drainage, commonly used in managing urinary retention or postoperative drainage.
- Design: Straight, soft, and flexible with a “frozen” (frosted) surface to facilitate easy, smooth insertion.
- Tip and Eyes: Features a soft, rounded, closed (atraumatic) tip and two lateral drainage eyes.
- Types: Available in various sizes (often color-coded) and lengths, including specific versions for men (longer, typically 40cm) and women.
- Usage: Used for urinary retention, bladder decompression, postoperative drainage, and obtaining sterile urine samples.
- Material: Usually non-toxic, non-irritant, radio-opaque PVC, allowing for visibility during imaging.
- Difference from Foley: Unlike Foley catheters, Nelaton catheters are intended for immediate, short-term drainage and do not have a balloon to hold them in place.
