An Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) is a medical brace or orthotic device worn on the lower leg and foot to support, align, control, or correct problems of the ankle and foot, especially during standing and walking. It typically extends from just below the knee down to the foot and can be custom made or off the shelf depending on a person’s needs.
PURPOSE
An AFO is prescribed to help:
- Support weak muscles or unstable joints
- Control abnormal movement patterns
- Improve gait (walking pattern) and balance
- Reduce pain and risk of falls
- Maintain proper foot/ankle alignment for better mobility and safety.
HOW IT WORKS
- It acts as an external support for the ankle and foot, limiting unwanted motions and providing stability.
- Some AFOs are solid (restricting ankle movement), while others have a hinged joints to allow controlled motion.
- The orthosis is worn inside a shoe with a sock underneath to protect the skin.
COMMON USES
AFOs are often used for conditions such as:
- Foot drop (difficulty lifting the front of the foot)
- Muscle weakness due to neurological conditions
- Cerebral palsy, stroke, or spinal cord injury
- Joint instability or abnormal gait patterns
